I am incredibly honoured to be taking on the role as Shirland Golf Club Captain 2020, following an unexpected and very kind invitation from Mr Richard Coates. This is a role that I take very seriously, not least because I could never have imagined it would have come my way. We have an amazing club, with a membership to rival any in the county; with these in mind, I am confident that the resurgence of Shirland GC will continue throughout this season and beyond.
I’d like to pay tribute to our President Colin Hancock, General Manager George Wishart, our PGA Professional, the committee, greens-staff, clubhouse staff and members for all their efforts, seen and unseen, to get us to where we are today. Together let’s continue the club’s growth throughout the 2020 season.
My priorities: Securing the long-term future of Shirland Golf Club / Growing the membership / Enhancing the already great reputation of our Junior section / Introducing more women to the Ladies section at Shirland GC.
But it doesn’t end there. The Captaincy gives me a tremendous opportunity, with your support, to do some good in our wider community, through the Captain’s Charity 2020. After careful consideration, I’ve decided that we will pour of efforts into the Teenage Cancer Trust. They do amazing work for young people who have been hit with a frightening diagnosis at a tough enough time in their young lives. In their darkest hour these young people, and their families deserve all the care and support that the TCT have to offer. I hope that you will give your support in whatever way you can.
We’ve had a fantastic 2019, under Richard’s captaincy, in all aspects of our club, on and off the course. We have a great course, that continues to improve under Paul Owen’s leadership, and a forward programme of developments that will help to grow the reputation of Shirland GC as the ‘go-to golfing and social venue’ in the area.
If you’re not currently a member at Shirland, please do come a take a look at what we are doing at the club, you’ll not be disappointed.
Members, don’t be shy. Make yourselves available to support our internal competitions, sign-up for inter-club competitions and support our social events. We can’t do it without you.
I’d also like to wish Christine Gamble and Josh Rowland all the very best of fortune for 2020 as our Ladies and Junior Captains respectively.
I’ll close by saying a huge thank-you to my wife Bev and daughters Jess (former Junior Captain) and Nicky, for their love and support for what is going to be an immensely busy year.
I wish you all a great golfing year.
