Mens Club Captain

Darrel Smith

I would like to firstly say that what an honour it will be for me this year to be Captain of Shirland Golf Club. Representing not only the golf club but all of you as members. I have been a member of Shirland for quite a considerable number of years and have many friends here but I look forward to meeting new friends and hopefully new members.

The committee here at Shirland are striving to make this golf club a success and are putting in a lot of work to make this work, so instead of members going out on the course and talking about the negatives let’s all turn them into positives and start pulling together and get the club back to where it was, we have a great club here at Shirland one of which we should be proud.

There are many ways of getting to know other members which is what golf is all about i.e. playing in the many Captains and Seniors friendly matches, please do feel  free to put your name down for these as they are a great way of making new friends and playing other courses, also after playing your round of golf, instead of just leaving the course please come upstairs into the clubhouse for a drink and a chat and to try the excellent food that is available and let’s create the atmosphere that we used to have in the clubhouse.

As captain I hope that all of you feel that I am approachable and if you do have a problem with anything please feel free to come and talk to me and hopefully both he committee and myself can resolve it, please do not take it out on the course as I feel this is one of the areas in which we as members fail.

I want to mention our junior section which is moving forward in leaps and bounds solely due to the great commitment from our junior organiser and his committee, we have produced some great young golfers here at Shirland over the years of which we should all be very proud and I wish them all the best for this coming year.

We have seen many changes over these last few years and I would like to personally thank the Speed Family for all their support since they took over the club. As we all know it is the members that make a club so could I ask you all to promote the club and if you have friends or family that are thinking of taking the game up please tell them what a great friendly club this is and hopefully we can increase the membership. We have a great team here at Shirland including the professional and his assistants, the head green keeper and his staff, and also the clubhouse bar and catering staff so let’s support them all and I am sure they will help you all in any way they can.

My charity for the coming year will be for Prostrate Cancer UK a subject which touches so many of us, so could I ask you to support this as best you can during my year as Captain.

I would like to wish our lady Captain and junior Captain a great 2016/2017 and hope we all have a great year also to all of you may your golf improve and your handicaps come down.

I will finish with a quote from the great Peter Alliss which goes “while playing amongst yourselves make you own little set of rules for your particular game but while your all doing that make sure the people behind you are enjoying their game as well “

Here’s not only to a great year but also a great future for Shirland Golf Club and its members
