Mens Club Captain

It’s the dawning of a new era at Shirland Golf Club. I thank every member for their loyalty and support throughout what has been a very difficult 2018 and I wish you all a great golfing year in 2019.

We can all look forward with excitement to the next chapter in the life of our club and that is thanks to our Chairman Mr Colin Hancock. Over the coming years we will be witness to the development of a club fit for the future, financially stable and with great facilities not only for golf but for a variety of sports and social functions. It is our duty as members to demonstrate to our Chairman that his investment was indeed wise and we can do that by supporting and promoting our club in all that we do.

I am honoured to be taking over from Richard Parker as Captain of Shirland Golf Club for 2019. My charity for the year is the Air Ambulance and I know that you will all do your best to help me raise funds for this great cause. I would draw your attention particularly to my Summer Ball on Saturday 20th July 2019.

2019 is also a year of significant changes within the rules of golf. Golf, as we all know, is a game of integrity where players are responsible for knowing and applying the rules correctly. I would urge all members to study the new rules of golf as we start the new season.

It is our golf course here at Shirland that is our greatest asset. Head Greenkeeper Paul Owens and his staff work tirelessly throughout the year for our benefit, for which we are truly grateful. We are honoured to be hosting the Bretby Cup and Henriques Memorial on behalf of Derbyshire Golf this year, and that is a reflection of the great quality of our course.

Members are encouraged to take part in our Invitation Day AM/AM on 9th June, along with my Captain’s Friendlies (x5) and Charity Open. These are great opportunities for us to showcase our golf course and help spread the word of our future plans. I welcome and look forward to meeting all new members who have joined us in the winter period and I ask that current members welcome them also.

We are privileged to have some of the best junior golfers in Derbyshire playing here at Shirland. This is testament to the work of Graham Naylor, our Junior Organiser. I wish Jamie Cornish all the best as Junior Captain for 2019 and to Graham we say a heartfelt thank you and best wishes in your final year as Junior Organiser. You will be sadly missed.

I would also like to wish Debbie Anderson all the best as Lady Captain for 2019. Shirland ladies are some of our clubs greatest supporters, they represent our club superbly and are a great example to us all.

Finally to my wife Jade and all the family, I thank you all for your love and kindness. I simply couldn’t do this without your encouragement and support.
