Captain’s Blog – 16 July 2020

Another weekend approaches, and hopefully it’s going to be a nice one. I don’t know about everyone else, but the recent weather, particularly the prevailing winds have been a real challenge.

I had the pleasure of a Stableford round with Trevor Davey and David Hinds on Wednesday, two players I’d not accompanied before, and I have to say they were excellent companions. It is my hope that, over the course of the season, I’ll get to meet and play 18 holes with as many different members as possible. So if we’ve yet to play, and you see a gap against my name on a start sheet, please feel free to put you name down.

I’d like to mention the work that our Chairman and the Greens Keepers have been doing this week, aimed at improving the course through the purchase or lease of new equipment. Negotiations are ongoing, but I’m encouraged by the determination they are showing to build some resilience into the machinery available. Recent issues with the rough mower evidences the need for a solution to be found, and hopefully better conditions are not too far away. Add to that the signs of improving coverage on the greens (still a way to go) and possibly the best fairway conditions that I can recall in my time at Shirland, and the future looks a little more promising.

This Sunday sees the first of our Trophy Competitions with the Ron Hollett Trophy – Medal Competition. Last year’s winner was Glen Wragg with a net 67 round. Good luck to everyone taking part.

As mentioned recently the Open season will soon be upon us. The Senior’s Open takes place on Wednesday 19 August. The format is 4BBB and entry fees have been reduced to £20 per pair, reflective of the absence of a functioning clubhouse at this time. Hopefully, we will have the course in good shape in plenty of time for this event. Although entry forms will be posted on the website shortly, all entries will need to be made in person or by phone with payment made at the time of entry. Please reach out to your friends and let’s see if we can get a good turnout for this event. The following Sunday (23 August) will be Captain’s Day. More about that one later….

Enjoy your golf, and I hope to see you soon.
